Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Gatlinburg area & Elk in Cherokee

We moved the motorhome from Little Arrow Outdoor Resort in Townsend to Twin Creek RV Resort in Gatlinburg. While we loved the Little Arrow resort for its amenities and location to Cades Cove, we wanted to spend a few days closer to the Parkway. Unfortunately, from a photography perspective, the weather was not great for sunrise or sunset photos of the mountain range. It was great for cascading river pictures though.

We enjoyed a drive down Greenbrier Rd, a less-traveled road in the park. It is scenic, with access to lots of hiking trails.

The road follows along a river, where I was able to get this nice shot.

We also took a ride along the popular Roaring Fork Rd. I always love checking out the historic cabins along this road.

We took a short walk down to the river where I was able to capture these photos:

We took a drive over to Cherokee to see if we could find any bugling elk. We did this twice, and during both evenings we found only a few elk in the area. Nothing too exciting.

The views over the mountain pass were nice.

We walked from the RV Resort into Gatlinburg’s city center (2.5 miles – all downhill 🙂 ) and took the trolley back. The city was pretty busy, too busy for our liking. We did find a great small restaurant, very close to our resort. We highly recommend it. It is called The Greenbrier. They make unique cocktails, and the food was very good.

We enjoyed our stay in Gatlinburg. We took it easy and relaxed a little, which was very much needed.
